Black Market, the Nollywood crime thriller produced by Nora Awolowo, has been awarded a second Guinness World Records title for its Lagos premiere. Guinness has now recognised the 26 September event at Tafawa Balewa Square for the largest audience at a film premiere, adding to the largest attendance at a film screening title it confirmed on the night. The Black Market Guinness World Record story is about more than a big crowd: it shows a new way for Nigerian films to launch. Here is what was confirmed, how the count worked, and how the film is doing in cinemas.

What we know

  • Two records (FACT, per the producer’s announcement). Awolowo announced on Instagram on Saturday 10 October that Guinness World Records had confirmed a second record, “Largest Audience at a Film Premiere”, alongside “Largest Attendance at a Film Screening”. Her statement was reported by QED.
  • The number (REPORTED). 51,258 people attended the screening at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on 26 September 2026. QED reports that, under Guinness rules, the figure counts people who stayed from the start of the film to the end.
  • The previous record (REPORTED). The screening record was previously 43,624, set in 2015 by the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena. Black Market passed it by 7,634.
  • Credits (REPORTED). The records are credited to Awolowo and Rixel Studios, alongside Damilola Osikoya and Switch Visual Limited.

What Nora Awolowo said

In her post, as quoted by QED, Awolowo wrote: “Two weeks ago, we made history. Today, we’re officially confirming that we made it twice!” She added: “On 26 September 2026, we brought together 51,258 people in Lagos to watch Black Market. What started as an idea to try something bold and push our limits has become something I’m still trying to wrap my head around.”

She also thanked the audience directly: “To the 51,258 people who showed up that day, you are a part of this story forever.”

How a Black Market Guinness World Record is counted

Guinness record attempts for attendance usually require independent stewards and a verified count, and the rules set conditions on who counts. For this screening, the condition reported was that people had to stay for the whole film, which is harder to meet at an open-air event than simply getting people through a gate.

The two titles are separate categories. One is about attendance at a screening. The other is about an audience at a premiere, meaning the first public showing. Black Market qualified for both because its record-setting screening was also its premiere.

About the film

Black Market is directed by Fatimah Binta-Gimsay, who co-wrote it with Abdul Tijani Ahmed. It follows five women in a cross-border smuggling operation whose lives are thrown into chaos when the daughter of one of them is kidnapped.

The cast includes Linda Ejiofor, Omowunmi Dada, Lateef Adedimeji, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini (Itele D Icon), Uzor Arukwe, Kanaga Eme Jnr and Taye Arimoro. Rixel Studios led the production with partners including FilmOne Studios and Switch Visuals, with Awolowo and Nicole Ofoegbu as producers.

The box office picture

A record crowd does not automatically become ticket sales, because the premiere was a one-off event. The cinema run is the real commercial test.

On the latest weekend chart reported by BusinessDay from Nigeria Box Office data, Black Market took ₦16 million, for a cumulative ₦19.92 million, in second place behind Agbara Nla: The Return, which took ₦99.8 million for the weekend (REPORTED). Starlomo was third with ₦14.6 million.

Those figures suggest the event built awareness but that word of mouth will decide how far the film goes. For the bigger picture of this season’s local hits, see our report on Agbara Nla’s record opening, and for help reading the numbers, our box office numbers explainer.

Why the record matters for Nollywood

Nigerian producers are trying new ways to launch films in a crowded market, from mass outdoor events to new production hubs such as the one in our story on Femi Adebayo’s Euphoria360 Hub. A Guinness title gives a film a headline that travels far beyond Lagos, including to diaspora audiences and international buyers who might never see a Nigerian weekend chart.

It also sets a high bar. Expect other producers to try large public premieres, and expect questions about cost, crowd safety and whether they translate into box office. For context on how far the industry has come, read our history of Nollywood.

What we do not know yet

We have not seen the record listings on the Guinness World Records website at the time of writing; the confirmation so far comes through the producer’s announcement as reported by QED. We also do not know the cost of the premiere or how many tickets the film has sold since. No streaming release has been announced.

What happens next

  • This week: Black Market continues in cinemas, and the next weekend chart will show whether its takings hold or grow.
  • Coming weeks: the records may appear on the Guinness World Records website.
  • Later: watch for news of a streaming or international release.
