Prime Video showed a new Blade Runner 2099 trailer at New York Comic Con on Saturday 10 October, and it confirms the limited series will arrive all at once, with all eight episodes on 25 November. The Blade Runner 2099 trailer sets up a Los Angeles where replicants, not humans, are in charge, with Hunter Schafer as a fugitive posing as a Blade Runner and Michelle Yeoh as a replicant in her final days. Here is what the trailer and the official synopsis tell us, who is in the cast, and when you can watch in Nigeria, the UK and the US.

What the Blade Runner 2099 trailer shows

The new footage leans into a reversal of the earlier films. In the original, humans hunted runaway replicants. Here, as SlashFilm describes the trailer, a war between humans and replicants has ended with the replicants on top, and it is rogue humans who are being hunted. Cora’s disguise is the twist: a human pretending to be a replicant Blade Runner.

The trailer also mentions a “cure” for replicants. Olwen, unlike the four-year Nexus-6 models of the 1982 film, has lived much longer, but she still knows the date she will die. In an interview with IGN quoted by SlashFilm, Luisa said “Blade Runner has always been about mortality”, adding that replicants “know exactly when they’re going to die”.

That suggests the series will return to the question at the heart of Roy Batty’s famous “tears in rain” speech: what it means to want more life.

The full cast, including an African connection

Beyond the leads, the recurring guest cast includes Sheila Atim, the Ugandan-born British actor known to many viewers from The Woman King, as well as Tom Burke (Furiosa), Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon), Johnny Harris, Daniel Rigby, Amy Lennox, Katelyn Rose Downey and Maurizio Lombardi.

Yeoh has a busy screen year. She is also returning for HBO’s Crazy Rich Asians sequel series, as we reported in our story on the Crazy Rich Asians series and its returning cast.

Why this series matters for the franchise

Blade Runner has a strange history. The 1982 film flopped at the box office and then became one of the most influential science fiction films ever made. Blade Runner 2049, released in 2017, won Oscars for cinematography and visual effects but also struggled to earn back its budget in cinemas.

A streaming series is a different bet. It does not need a big opening weekend. It needs people to keep watching, and Prime Video’s choice to release all eight episodes on one day points to a binge-watch strategy. For how streamers measure that kind of success, our explainer on how Netflix Top 10 views work covers the metrics most platforms now use.

The release also lands at an awkward moment for Prime Video’s genre slate. Nicolas Cage said at the same convention that he refused an AI waiver for Spider-Noir, a show Amazon cancelled after one season. Comic Con weekend also brought the trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs, which we covered in our breakdown of The Exorcist: Martyrs trailer.

When to watch in WAT, GMT and ET

Prime Video usually releases new series at midnight Pacific Time or at a set global time. The exact launch hour for 25 November has not been confirmed. If it follows the common global pattern of 12am GMT, that would be 1am WAT in Lagos and 7pm ET on 24 November in New York. We will confirm once Prime Video publishes the time.

What we do not know yet

We do not know the episode running times, whether this is planned as a single limited season with no follow-up, or how closely the plot connects to characters from Blade Runner 2049. Reviews are not out yet, so it is too early to judge how it compares to the films. When critics do weigh in, our guide to how Rotten Tomatoes scores work will help you read the numbers.

What happens next

  • Now: the new trailer and teaser key art are on Prime Video’s official channels.
  • November: expect reviews and premiere events in the weeks before launch.
  • 25 November: all eight episodes arrive on Prime Video worldwide.
