Who Olatunji Disu is
Disu is Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector-General of Police. The Nigeria Police Council endorsed his appointment on 2 March 2026, according to the State House and The Nation, and President Bola Tinubu swore him in as substantive IGP shortly afterwards, Punch reported. His predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, had resigned before Disu was first named acting IGP.
Saturday’s meeting fits the outreach approach Disu described: engaging stakeholders outside the force to improve public perception. Inviting one of the country’s most-followed musicians is a high-visibility version of that strategy.
Why Burna Boy meets IGP is a notable image
Relations between the police and young Nigerians have been a sensitive public issue for years. In October 2020, the #EndSARS protests spread across Nigeria and the diaspora, calling for the disbandment of the police’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad and wider police reform. Police authorities announced that SARS was being dissolved that same month.
Burna Boy was one of the most prominent musicians to publicly back the protests at the time, and later released the song “20 10 20”, named after a date that became central to the movement. That history is why a handshake with the police chief at the Police House drew so much reaction online. Legit.ng’s round-up of comments was largely light-hearted, with fans joking about the greeting between the two men.
It is worth being careful about what the meeting does and does not mean. A conversation about the creative industry’s role is not the same as a programme, and neither side has published a plan. Any campaign or project would need to be announced by the police or by the artist’s team before it can be reported as fact.
Where it sits in Burna Boy’s year
The meeting comes in a crowded month for the singer. As we reported, he is booked for the halftime show at the NFL’s Paris game at the Stade de France on 25 October and for a show at the new Apple Music Hall in London on 29 October. Full details are in Burna Boy booked for Apple Music Hall London and NFL Paris halftime.
TheCable notes his Grammy win for Twice as Tall. For where that award sits among Nigerian wins and near-misses, see our guide to Nigerian Grammy winners from Sade to Tems. Burna Boy often describes his music as Afrofusion rather than Afrobeats; our explainer on Afrobeats vs Afrobeat, Afropop and amapiano sets out why those labels matter.
Why celebrity outreach is a common tactic
Governments and public bodies in many countries use well-known entertainers to reach young audiences, from public-health campaigns to voter-registration drives. The thinking is simple: a single post from a major artist can reach more young people than an official statement. The risk is also clear. If an artist’s fans believe nothing has changed, the partnership can draw criticism for both sides, which is why concrete, published commitments tend to matter more than photo opportunities.
That is the test for this meeting. Disu framed it as part of a wider plan; Burna Boy said he was willing to help. What happens next will show whether it becomes a measurable initiative.
What happens next
- Watch for an official statement from the Nigeria Police Force or Burna Boy’s team setting out any joint project, if one is planned.
- If an initiative is announced, look for specifics: what it involves, who runs it, and how its results will be measured.
- Burna Boy’s next scheduled public dates are the NFL Paris halftime on 25 October and Apple Music Hall London on 29 October.
- We will update this story if either side publishes details.
