Sadie Sink in talks to lead A24’s The Guest
Sadie Sink is in talks to star in a film version of The Guest, Emma Cline’s 2024 bestseller, and to produce it alongside Square Peg, Deadline reports. Lorene Scafaria, who made Hustlers and directed episodes of Succession, is in talks to write and direct. A24 and Square Peg are in exclusive negotiations for the book rights. Deadline’s sources say about a dozen other buyers bid for it, and that Sink, a fan of the novel, attached herself early, with Scafaria joining soon after.
The novel follows a scheming grifter making her way through a summer in the Hamptons. It was longlisted for the PEN/Faulkner Award. Variety notes that the news comes after Sink moved from Stranger Things into the Marvel films as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Next up for her is Marvel’s X-Men reboot, directed by Jake Schreier and dated for 5 May 2028.
Danny Boyle puts the third 28 Years Later on hold
The third 28 Years Later film, set up at the end of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is not coming any time soon, Danny Boyle told an audience at the BFI London Film Festival, Variety reports. The problem is funding, not the script. “Alex [Garland] has written a fantastic script. We just need money,” Boyle said. He added that Garland is busy writing and directing A24’s Elden Ring adaptation: “So it’s on the back burner at the moment.” Variety says it has asked Sony, which released the first two films, for comment.
In the same talk, held with Puck’s Matt Belloni, Boyle explained one of the most discussed choices in Ink, his film about Rupert Murdoch, editor Larry Lamb and the rise of The Sun in the late 1960s. An actor played Margaret Thatcher in a late-night scene in Lamb’s office, and AI was then used to put the late prime minister’s face on her. Boyle said he did not want an impersonator, and that he chose not to ask the Thatcher estate for permission. “I don’t think the estate of people like Margaret Thatcher should have control over our ability to insist on ideas in art about what her influence was on our lives,” he said.
Damson Idris plays Miles Davis in Miles & Juliette
Production has started in Paris on Miles & Juliette, Bill Pohlad’s new film for River Road Entertainment, with Damson Idris as Miles Davis and Anamaria Vartolomei as the French singer and actor Juliette Gréco, Deadline reports. Zora Howard, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, wrote the script. It follows a 22-year-old Davis on his first trip outside the US, to Paris in 1949, where he falls for Gréco. A first-look image of the two leads has been released.
The rest of the cast is now set. J. Alphonse Nicholson plays Kenny Clarke, Jay Reeves plays Tadd Dameron, Terrace Martin plays Charlie Parker, Denny Love plays James Moody, Lodric D. Collins plays Max Roach and Hubert Point-Du Jour plays John Coltrane. Robert Glasper is the composer and music producer, and Mick Jagger is among the producers through Jagged Films. Pohlad last told a musician’s story in Love & Mercy, his Brian Wilson film. For Nigerian readers, the London-born Idris, whose parents are Nigerian and who made his name in the FX drama Snowfall, now gets to play one of jazz’s biggest figures in a lead role.
Other Mommy makes $3.6 million in previews
Universal’s horror film Other Mommy took $3.6 million from Thursday previews at 2,850 cinemas before opening on 3,365 screens on Friday, Deadline reports. Jessica Chastain plays two roles, a girl’s real mother and the sinister lookalike, in the R-rated film from director Rob Savage, with James Wan producing and Blumhouse Atomic Monster behind it. Deadline calls the previews strong for a Blumhouse film of this size, though early reviews have been harsh. The film was aiming for an opening weekend in the mid-$20 million range.
Sony’s The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network, had a soft start with $650,000 from Thursday previews at 2,368 locations. Mikey Madison plays Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz and Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. It sits at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, and projections point to an opening weekend in the mid-single-digit millions. Avatar: Seven Havens renewed for two more seasons
Paramount+ has renewed Avatar: Seven Havens for Books 3 and 4, and ordered a new animated series, Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, Deadline reports. The renewal was announced at Friday’s New York Comic Con panel, on the same day Book 1 premiered with three episodes. More episodes follow on 16, 23 and 30 October. Set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the show follows a young Earthbender, Pavi, who learns she is the Avatar after Korra, in a world wrecked by a disaster. Wave of Chaos will follow Kuruk as a rebellious teenage Avatar who learns the four elements while travelling the world, with co-creator Bryan Konietzko as showrunner. Paramount+ is now part of Skydance’s merged company; see what that means for viewers in our HBO Max and Paramount+ explainer.
Taylor Swift’s Patient Zero holds the UK No. 1
“Patient Zero” is the UK’s No. 1 single for a second week in a row on the chart published on Friday, Billboard reports. The song comes from the Encore deluxe edition of The Life of a Showgirl, and it is Swift’s third UK chart-topper of 2026, after “Opalite” and “I Knew It, I Knew You” from Toy Story 5. Sienna Spiro’s “Great Expectation” stays at No. 2, while Jamie Miller’s “Babydoll” and Ashe’s “Stop the Wedding!” both reach the top five for the first time. In the US, the song debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100. Our guide to how the Billboard and UK Official charts work explains how the two charts differ.
