The East of Eden Netflix series has opened at No. 1. Zoe Kazan’s seven-part adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, starring Florence Pugh, drew 6.5 million views in its first four days, according to Netflix’s weekly Top 10 published on 6 October. The same chart brings the first official numbers for A Different World, the revival with a Ghanaian-Nigerian lead character, which climbed to No. 3 in its second week. Here is what the figures show.

What we know

  • No. 1 debut (FACT). East of Eden: Limited Series topped Netflix’s global English-language TV list for 28 September to 4 October with 6.5 million views and 45.5 million hours viewed, Netflix’s Tudum site and The Futon Critic’s copy of the release show.
  • Four days only (FACT). The series premiered on 1 October, so those views came in four days, Variety reports.
  • A Different World at No. 3 (FACT). The sequel to the classic sitcom recorded 5.1 million views in its second week, with hours viewed up about 21% on its first week, according to the full table published by What’s on Netflix.
  • Book sales (REPORTED). Variety reports that Penguin Classics has seen a 200% rise in sales of the novel since Netflix announced the series.
  • Most-watched overall (FACT). The week’s most-watched title on any list was the film UNABOMBER, with 24.9 million views in its second week.

How the East of Eden Netflix debut compares

A “view” in Netflix’s Top 10 is total hours watched divided by the running time. That means a short series and a long one can be compared fairly, and a viewer who stops halfway counts as half a view. We explain the method in our guide to how Netflix Top 10 views work.

By that measure, East of Eden’s start is solid rather than spectacular. What’s on Netflix said readers would judge it as either good for its genre or disappointing next to other big-budget limited series, depending on their expectations. It beat Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, which fell to No. 2 with 5.7 million views in its third week and has 32.3 million views so far, according to The Futon Critic.

The series has a long road ahead. Prestige dramas tend to build through word of mouth, reviews and awards talk rather than in one huge weekend, so its second week will say more than its first.

The show and the people behind it

East of Eden is Steinbeck’s 1952 family saga, set in California’s Salinas Valley. Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, one of the most chilling characters in American fiction, whose life becomes tangled with the Trask brothers, Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles (Mike Faist). Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Hoon Lee and Ciarán Hinds are also in the cast, Netflix says.

Zoe Kazan created the series. There is a family link to the story: her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film of East of Eden, which starred James Dean. That film covered only the last part of the novel. A seven-episode series has room to tell the whole book, including Cathy’s story.

What the A Different World numbers mean

When we reported on the revival on 29 September, Netflix had not yet published any figures, and early rankings came from unofficial daily charts. These are the first official numbers. You can read about the show’s Nigerian connections, including RMD’s guest role and the Ghanaian-Nigerian student Kojo Achebe, in our story on the A Different World revival.

Rising in week two is a good sign. Most new series lose viewers after their first week. A show that grows usually means people are recommending it to friends.

The rest of the Top 10

On the English TV list, the other new entries were LEGO ONE PIECE at No. 5 with 3.8 million views and WWE’s Raw at No. 8. Wonka’s The Golden Ticket was No. 4. The Gentlemen held two places, with Season 2 at No. 6 and Season 1 still at No. 9, What’s on Netflix reports.

On the English film list:

  • UNABOMBER: 24.9 million views (week 2)
  • The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part: 11.6 million (new)
  • Tyler Perry’s Doing Life: 9.3 million (new)
  • The Breadwinner: 5.3 million (new)
  • The Equalizer 3: 5.0 million

What’s on Netflix calls Doing Life a disappointment by Tyler Perry’s standards, noting it is one of only two of his Netflix films to open with fewer than 10 million views. KPop Demon Hunters is still on the film list in its 67th week, with 2.4 million views.

In cinemas, the big new release that weekend was Verity, which we covered in our weekend box-office report.

What this means for viewers

For viewers in the UK, the US and Nigeria, both East of Eden and A Different World are Netflix originals, so they should be available in most Netflix regions. If you prefer to wait for the reviews, critics quoted by Netflix have called East of Eden “brilliant”, although reactions on social media are more mixed, with some viewers finding parts of the adaptation too modern.

East of Eden is billed as a limited series, so it is designed to tell the whole story in one season.

What happens next

  • Netflix publishes its next weekly Top 10, covering 5 to 11 October, on Tuesday, 13 October.
  • That chart will show whether East of Eden grows in its first full week and whether A Different World holds its place.
  • East of Eden could become an awards contender in the limited-series categories next year.
