Tiwa Savage Teni boxing challenge: “pick a date” reply goes viral, but no fight is booked

A joke about a boxing match between two of Nigeria’s best-known female singers has turned into one of the weekend’s biggest talking points. Teni posted a video saying she and Tiwa Savage should be “next” in the ring, and Tiwa Savage replied with three words: “pick a date”. The Tiwa Savage Teni boxing exchange follows the 1 October Chaos in the Ring celebrity fight night in Lagos, and actress Nkechi Blessing has now jumped in too. Here is what was actually said, what is confirmed (very little), and why celebrity boxing keeps pulling in Nigerian entertainers.

What we know
- Teni’s challenge (REPORTED). In a video on her Instagram page, reported by Independent Newspaper Nigeria and Naija News, Teni said she and Tiwa Savage should fight next. Independent quotes her saying, in Pidgin, that she would beat Tiwa, joking that she would not even look at Tiwa’s son Jamal’s face, and that if they were paid ₦1.5 billion she would buy a Bugatti. She added that she would apologise to Tiwa after the fight.
- Tiwa’s reply (REPORTED). Independent reports that Tiwa Savage responded by telling Teni to “pick a date”.
- Nkechi Blessing’s offer (REPORTED). Naija News reports that the actress Nkechi Blessing commented, “Teni, let’s go next”, and that Teni replied, “You wey suppose be my bouncer”, meaning Nkechi should be her bodyguard, not her opponent.
- No fight is booked (FACT). There is no confirmed date, venue, promoter or purse for any Tiwa Savage and Teni bout. The ₦1.5 billion figure came from Teni’s joke, not from an offer.

Read the Tiwa Savage Teni exchange as banter
Both artists are known for playful social media personalities, Teni especially. The tone of the video, as described in the reports, was comic: a threat followed immediately by a promise to say sorry. Nothing in the coverage suggests a real falling out between the two.
Teni’s video was also part of a wider rant about money in the music business, according to Naija News, in which she questioned how some male artists afford luxury cars. That context is easy to lose when a clip is cut down to the fight line.
So the honest headline is not “Tiwa Savage and Teni to fight”. It is “Teni joked about a fight and Tiwa Savage played along”. If that changes, it will be because a promoter announces it.
What Chaos in the Ring is
Chaos in the Ring is a Lagos celebrity boxing event where entertainers, often ones involved in online spats, settle them with gloves on. The most recent edition took place on 1 October and featured the BBNaija star Phyna and Nkechi Blessing, while the skit maker Carter Efe kept his place as the event’s best-known winner after earlier bouts against Portable and Speed Darlington. We covered the results in our report on the Chaos in the Ring results.
That explains why Nkechi Blessing is in the conversation. She has already been in the ring and is clearly looking for another fight.
Why celebrity boxing keeps growing
Celebrity boxing works because it turns a social media argument into a ticketed, streamed event. Fans who follow the online back-and-forth are invited to pay to see the outcome. Globally, influencer boxing events have drawn huge streaming audiences, and Nigerian promoters are applying the same model to local stars.
There are real risks. These are amateur fighters, and boxing is a dangerous sport even with gloves, headguards and referees. Any serious promoter should insist on medical checks, proper training camps and licensed officials. A quick reminder of who they are
Tiwa Savage is one of the most successful women in Afrobeats, with a career that runs from the early 2010s through hits such as “Kele Kele Love”, “Eminado” and “Koroba”, and international collaborations. Teni, born Teniola Apata, broke through in 2018 with “Case” and “Askamaya” and is known for her humour as much as her music.
A fight between them would be a huge draw, which is exactly why fans and promoters are now talking about it.
How to spot a real fight announcement
Celebrity fight rumours spread fast, and fake posters are easy to make. A real booking normally comes with a named promoter, a date, a venue and a ticketing link, and both fighters share it on their verified pages. If a post has none of those, it is speculation, however convincing the graphic looks.
What happens next
- Watch for any announcement from the Chaos in the Ring organisers. Until a promoter names a date, treat claims of a booked fight as rumour.
- Watch Tiwa Savage’s and Teni’s own pages for whether they keep the joke going or move on.
- Nkechi Blessing may push for a rematch or a new opponent at the next edition.
