18th Headies moved to April 2027: new Toronto dates, what changes and what to do if you booked travel

The 18th Headies will no longer hold its Toronto finale this month. Organisers have moved the awards to Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 April 2027, saying they want to expand the programme in Nigeria and Canada first, and they have apologised to guests who had already booked travel. The 18th Headies change affects nominees, fans and anyone with flights or hotels for the original date. Here is what has been confirmed, what has not, and what to do if your plans are affected.

What we know
- New dates (FACT). The Headies’ official website says the Toronto finale is now on 10 and 11 April 2027, alongside a Global Trade and Investment Summit.
- Original date (REPORTED). HipTV, the broadcaster linked to the Headies organisers, reports that the ceremony had been scheduled for 23 October 2026.
- The reason given (FACT). The organisers say the move allows an expanded programme across Nigeria and Canada. In a statement dated 8 October and published on 10 October, they said “Road to The Headies” activities, described as workshops, seminars and industry engagements, will go ahead during the original event period.
- The apology (FACT). The official statement quotes the Headies founder Ayo Animashaun: “We recognise the inconvenience this change causes, particularly for guests who have committed time and resources to joining us in Toronto. We sincerely apologise and appreciate their patience.”
- The theme (FACT). The 18th edition keeps its theme, “Africa to the World”.

What has not been announced
The organisers have not yet published the Road to The Headies calendar, venues or registration details. They have not said whether nominations, voting or categories will change because of the longer gap. We also have not seen any detail on refunds or rebooking for ticket holders. The statement says those details will come through the Headies’ official channels.
So, for now, treat any list of “new nominees” or “reopened voting” circulating on social media with care unless it comes from the Headies’ own pages.
If you had travel plans for the 18th Headies
The organisers have not offered a compensation scheme, so travellers should go to their own providers first:
- Flights. Check whether your fare allows a date change. Many airlines charge a change fee plus any fare difference, but some flexible fares do not.
- Hotels. Read your booking’s cancellation terms. Refundable rates can usually be cancelled online. Prepaid rates often cannot, but it is worth asking the hotel directly.
- Visas. A Canadian visitor visa is usually valid for multiple trips until it expires. Check your visa’s end date against April 2027 before you rebook.
- Tickets. If you bought an event ticket, keep your receipt and watch the Headies’ official channels for transfer or refund information.
Why the Headies keep moving
The Headies began in 2006 as the Hip Hop World Awards, founded by Ayo Animashaun, and grew into one of the best-known awards in Nigerian music. In recent years it has taken its ceremony abroad, holding editions in the United States, as our explainer on how the Headies awards work sets out.
An overseas finale helps reach the diaspora and sponsors, but it also adds cost and complexity: venues, visas for artists and guests, and travel for a Lagos-based industry. Shifting the date by six months, and pairing the awards with a trade and investment summit, suggests the organisers want the Toronto edition to be a bigger business event, not just a ceremony.
The move also changes the calendar for African music awards. The 10th AFRIMA is already taking entries, as covered in our guide to how to enter the 10th AFRIMA, and the Grammy nominations land in November. For a full view of the season, see our 2027 entertainment awards and festival calendar, which we will update with the new Headies dates.
What it means for artists
For artists, a later ceremony is a mixed outcome. Songs and albums released in late 2025 and 2026 will be older by the time winners are named. On the other hand, the Road to The Headies events give nominees more time in front of industry figures in two countries. How useful that turns out to be will depend on the programme, which has not been released.
Nigerian acts are in a heavy awards season internationally. Tems and Tyla are up at the Soul Train Awards, as in our Soul Train Awards 2026 voting guide, and several Nigerian stars have entered for the 2027 Grammys.
What happens next
- Late October: Road to The Headies events are due to run during the original event period. Dates and venues are still to be announced.
- Coming weeks: organisers say they will publish the full programme and guest information on official channels.
- 10 and 11 April 2027: the 18th Headies finale and summit in Toronto.
