How the Champions League works: 2026/27 format explained
A plain guide to the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League format, from the 36-club league phase to the final in Madrid on 5 June 2027.
How the Champions League works changed in 2024, when UEFA replaced the familiar 32-team group stage with a single 36-team league. The 2026/27 season is the third under this format. This guide explains it step by step: who qualifies, how the league phase draw works, what each finishing position means, how the knockout bracket is set, and what happens when teams finish level on points. It is based on UEFA’s competition regulations for 2026/27 and UEFA.com’s season guide, and is correct as of October 2026.
The short answer
- 36 clubs play in one league table in the league phase.
- Eight matches each: four at home and four away, against eight different opponents, two from each of four seeding pots.
- Top eight go straight to the round of 16.
- Ninth to 24th play a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining eight places in the last 16.
- 25th to 36th are eliminated, with no drop into the Europa League.
- The 2027 final is at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on Saturday 5 June 2027.
Step 1: qualifying for the league phase
Most of the 36 places go to clubs that qualify directly through their domestic leagues. The remainder are filled by winners of the summer qualifying rounds, which UEFA says started on 7 July 2026. For 2026/27, UEFA.com’s season guide lists five clubs each from England and Spain, four each from Germany and Italy, three from France, and others from countries including Norway, Türkiye, Portugal and the Netherlands.
Russian clubs remain suspended from UEFA competitions.
Step 2: the league phase draw
UEFA’s regulations divide the 36 clubs into four pots of nine according to the club coefficient rankings. The titleholder is top seed in Pot 1. Each club is then drawn against two opponents from each pot, playing one of them at home and the other away.
The draw has two main limits. In principle, clubs from the same country cannot be drawn together, and no club can face more than two opponents from any one other country. The regulations also allow the draw to be run digitally.
Step 3: eight matchdays, one table
Each club plays eight single matches, not home-and-away pairs. Under the regulations, no club should have more than two consecutive games at home, or two consecutive games on the road. They also say each club should have one home and one away game across the first two matchdays, and the same across the last two.
All 36 clubs go into one table, with three points for a win and one for a draw. For 2026/27, the eight matchdays run from 8–10 September 2026 to 27 January 2027 and every club plays its last league game on that single date.
Step 4: what your final position means
- 1st–8th: straight into the round of 16, seeded. These clubs play the second leg at home.
- 9th–16th: into the knockout play-offs as seeded teams, also with the second leg at home.
- 17th–24th: into the knockout play-offs unseeded.
- 25th–36th: out of Europe for the season.
Step 5: the knockout bracket
The knockout draw is not fully open. UEFA pairs teams by finishing position. Clubs 9 or 10 meet clubs 23 or 24, clubs 11 or 12 meet 21 or 22, clubs 13 or 14 meet 19 or 20, and clubs 15 or 16 meet 17 or 18. The play-off winners then go into set places in the round of 16, against the teams that finished in the top eight.
From the round of 16 the bracket is fixed. The top four league-phase teams play the second leg of their quarter-finals at home, and the top two also host the second leg of their semi-finals. When a seeded team is knocked out, the club that beat them takes over their place in the bracket.
The 2026/27 knockout calendar:
- Knockout play-offs: 16/17 and 23/24 February 2027
- Round of 16: 9/10 and 16/17 March 2027
- Quarter-finals: 6/7 and 13/14 April 2027
- Semi-finals: 27/28 April and 4/5 May 2027
- Final: 5 June 2027, Madrid
Ties: extra time, penalties and no away goals
Every knockout round before the final is played over two legs. If the aggregate score is level after the second leg, two 15-minute periods of extra time follow, and then a penalty shootout if needed. Away goals no longer decide two-legged ties. The final is a single match, with extra time and penalties if necessary.
Tie-breakers in the league table
If clubs finish level on points, UEFA’s regulations apply these criteria in order:
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Away goals scored
- Wins
- Away wins
- The total points won by the club’s league phase opponents
- Those opponents’ combined goal difference, then their combined goals scored
- Disciplinary points (a yellow card counts one, a red card three)
- Club coefficient
Criterion six is unusual. Because every club plays a different set of opponents, this criterion in effect gives credit to the team that faced stronger opposition.
What the winners get
UEFA.com says the champions receive the trophy, which is 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg. They also get a place in the next season’s league phase if they have not already qualified through their domestic league. In August 2027 they will play the Europa League winners in the UEFA Super Cup.
