Super Falcons WAFCON titles: Nigeria’s 10 African crowns
Nigeria's Super Falcons have won the Women's Africa Cup of Nations ten times. Here is every title, plus what went wrong in 2026.
Last updated: 6 October 2026.
The Super Falcons’ WAFCON titles make Nigeria the most successful team in the history of African women’s football. CAF credits them with ten Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crowns, the most recent won in Rabat in July 2025. This guide lists every title and final, explains why some lists say twelve, and covers the 2026 tournament, where Nigeria went out in the quarter-finals for the first time and then missed a Women’s World Cup for the first time. Results come from CAF, BBC Sport, ESPN and AP, and are correct as of October 2026.
The short answer
- Official count: ten WAFCON titles, in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and the 2024 edition (played in 2025).
- Why some say twelve: Nigeria also won the 1991 and 1995 African qualifying competitions, which were home-and-away contests rather than full tournaments. CAF’s “tenth title” count for 2024 leaves them out.
- Perfect in finals: Nigeria have won every WAFCON final they have played.
- Other winners: Equatorial Guinea (2008, 2012), South Africa (2022) and Cameroon (2026).
- 2026: Nigeria lost 1–0 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals, then lost a play-off to South Africa and missed the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Every Super Falcons WAFCON final
- 1998 (Nigeria): beat Ghana 2–0 at Gateway Stadium, in the first edition played as a full tournament.
- 2000 (South Africa): beat the hosts 2–0. The match was abandoned in the 73rd minute after objects were thrown, and the result stood.
- 2002 (Nigeria): beat Ghana 2–0.
- 2004 (South Africa): beat Cameroon 5–0.
- 2006 (Nigeria): beat Ghana 1–0.
- 2010 (South Africa): beat Equatorial Guinea 4–2.
- 2014 (Namibia): beat Cameroon 2–0.
- 2016 (Cameroon): beat the hosts 1–0 with a late goal.
- 2018 (Ghana): drew 0–0 with South Africa and won 4–3 on penalties.
- 2024 (Morocco, played July 2025): came from 2–0 down to beat the hosts 3–2 in Rabat.
The 2025 comeback in Rabat
Nigeria’s tenth title may have been the hardest. Morocco led 2–0 through Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy in front of a home crowd. CAF and BBC Sport reported that Esther Okoronkwo then took charge: she scored a penalty and set up Folashade Ijamilusi to level the game, and substitute Jennifer Echegini scored the winner two minutes from time.
The title was Nigeria’s first since 2018. It made the Super Falcons the first women’s team on any continent to win ten continental championships.
The years Nigeria did not win
- 2008 and 2012: Equatorial Guinea won both, as hosts in 2008.
- 2022 (Morocco): South Africa won their first title by beating the hosts 2–1. It was the first final without Nigeria or Equatorial Guinea. Nigeria finished fourth.
- 2026 (Morocco): Cameroon won their first title.
WAFCON 2026: Nigeria’s worst campaign
The 2026 tournament was a shock from the first game. Debutants Malawi beat the holders 3–2 in Rabat. CAF reported that Temwa Chawinga scored twice and her sister Tabitha added the third, while Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu scored for Nigeria.
Nigeria recovered to reach the quarter-finals but lost 1–0 to Cameroon. ESPN reported that a first-half free-kick from Myriam Nyadjou settled the match. It was the first time Nigeria had failed to reach a WAFCON semi-final. Coach Justin Madugu said afterwards that his team had wasted chances.
Losing in the quarter-finals sent Nigeria into CAF’s play-off round for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. BBC Sport reported that they lost that play-off 2–1 to South Africa. Nigeria had played at every Women’s World Cup since the first in 1991, so this was their first miss.
Cameroon went on to beat debutants Malawi 3–0 in the final in Rabat. Marie Ngah Manga scored twice and Naomi Eto got the third, and CAF noted that Cameroon did not concede a goal all tournament.
Why the gap has closed
For two decades Nigeria’s depth was unmatched, and their youth teams kept feeding the senior side. The U-20 Falconets reached the U-20 Women’s World Cup final in 2010 and 2014, and Asisat Oshoala won both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot at the 2014 tournament.
The recent finals show how much the field has widened. The last three finals involved five different countries: South Africa and Morocco in 2022, Nigeria and Morocco in 2024, and Cameroon and Malawi in 2026. Malawi reached the final at their first WAFCON. Morocco have now hosted three editions in a row, and the tournament has grown from eight teams to twelve since 2022.
