Frequently asked questions
What time zone is Nigeria in?
Nigeria uses West Africa Time (WAT), which is UTC+1. The whole country uses the same time, from Lagos to Maiduguri, so there is no time difference between states.
Does Nigeria use daylight saving time?
No. Nigeria stays on UTC+1 all year. When the US, UK or Canada change their clocks, the gap between Nigeria and those countries changes by one hour, but Nigerian clocks stay the same.
Is Nigeria time the same as UK time?
Only in summer. From late March to late October the UK is on BST (UTC+1), the same as Nigeria. In winter the UK is on GMT (UTC+0), so Nigeria is one hour ahead.
How many hours is Nigeria ahead of the US?
Nigeria is 5 hours ahead of New York in summer and 6 hours in winter. It is 8 hours ahead of Los Angeles in summer and 9 in winter. The change happens on the US daylight saving dates in March and November.
Is Nigeria in GMT+1?
Yes. GMT+1, UTC+1 and WAT all mean the same time in Nigeria. You may also see it written as Africa/Lagos in apps and calendars.
Working for US clients from Nigeria
A New York business day (9 AM to 5 PM) runs from 2 PM to 10 PM in Nigeria during US summer time and from 3 PM to 11 PM in winter. For a Los Angeles client it is 5 PM to 1 AM, or 6 PM to 2 AM in winter. The cheat sheet above always shows today’s exact times, and the meeting planner finds the slot that suits both of you.
