Nigerian clubs CAF Champions League record: Enyimba and more

By Published

Enyimba remain the only Nigerian club to win the CAF Champions League. We look back at Nigeria's finals, near-misses and other continental trophies.

Nigerian clubs have played in the CAF Champions League, and the African Cup of Champions Clubs before it, for half a century, but only one has won it. Enyimba of Aba were African champions in 2003 and 2004. Five other Nigerian finals ended in defeat, and the country’s clubs have done better in Africa’s secondary competitions. This guide lists every Nigerian final, explains how Enyimba won their titles and compares Nigeria with North Africa’s dominant clubs. Results come from BBC Sport, CAF and official match records, and are correct as of October 2026.

The short answer

  • Nigerian winners: only Enyimba, in 2003 and 2004.
  • Nigerian runners-up: five times. Enugu Rangers (1975), Shooting Stars (1984 and 1996), Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now Heartland (1988), and Heartland (2009).
  • Record holders: Egypt’s Al Ahly, with 12 titles.
  • Current champions: Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, who beat AS FAR 2–1 on aggregate in the 2026 final.
  • Other continental trophies: Nigerian clubs won the old Cup Winners’ Cup three times and the CAF Cup twice.

Enyimba 2003: Nigeria’s first African champions

Enyimba reached the 2003 final against Egypt’s Ismaily. The final was played over two legs. They won the first leg 2–0 at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, then held on in Ismailia, losing only 1–0, for a 2–1 aggregate win. BBC Sport reported the result as the first time a Nigerian club had won Africa’s top club competition. Kadiri Ikhana was the coach.

Enyimba 2004: retaining the title on penalties

A year later, Enyimba played Étoile du Sahel of Tunisia in the final. They lost the away first leg 2–1 and won the second 2–1 in Abuja, where the match was moved from Aba because of security concerns. That left the tie 3–3 on aggregate. Enyimba won the shootout 5–3 and kept the trophy. The club also won the CAF Super Cup in 2004 and 2005, as African champions.

Enyimba are still Nigeria’s most decorated club, with nine league titles. Their latest came in 2023.

The five Nigerian finals that got away

  • 1975, Enugu Rangers: lost both legs to Hafia of Guinea, 1–0 in Conakry and 2–1 in Lagos.
  • 1984, Shooting Stars: lost to Zamalek, 2–0 in Cairo and 1–0 in Lagos.
  • 1988, Iwuanyanwu Nationale: won the first leg 1–0 in Ibadan against ES Sétif of Algeria, then lost 4–0 in Constantine.
  • 1996, Shooting Stars: each side won its home leg 2–1 against Zamalek, and Zamalek won the penalty shootout.
  • 2009, Heartland: beat TP Mazembe 2–1 in Owerri but lost 1–0 in Lubumbashi, and Mazembe won on away goals.

The 2009 final is especially painful for Owerri fans. Their club had also lost the 1988 final under its previous name, Iwuanyanwu Nationale.

Success in Africa’s other competitions

Nigerian clubs have more to show from Africa’s secondary competitions.

  • African Cup Winners’ Cup: Shooting Stars (1976), Enugu Rangers (1977) and BCC Lions (1990) all won it.
  • CAF Cup: Shooting Stars (1992) and Bendel Insurance (1994) won it.

Both competitions were later merged into today’s CAF Confederation Cup.

How Nigeria compare with Africa’s powerhouses

Clubs from Egypt have won the competition 19 times, and Al Ahly alone hold the record of 12 titles. Moroccan clubs have seven. Nigeria’s two titles, both won by the same club in back-to-back seasons, put the country well down the list. Nigeria have reached seven finals in total.

North African clubs have dominated since the competition was relaunched as the Champions League in 1997. The 2026 final was another example of that strength, even though Sundowns won it: their opponents, AS FAR, are from Rabat. CAF reported that Sundowns won the first leg 1–0 in Pretoria and drew 1–1 in Rabat, where goalkeeper Ronwen Williams saved a penalty.

Enyimba’s golden decade

The continental titles came during the most successful spell any Nigerian club has had. Enyimba won the Nigerian league in 2001, 2002 and 2003, then again in 2005, 2007 and 2009–10. Later titles followed in 2015, 2019 and 2023, making nine in all. The 2003 and 2004 African titles, plus the two CAF Super Cups, mean the Aba club has won more continental silverware than any other Nigerian team in the modern era.

Enyimba are still the yardstick for Nigerian clubs in Africa. Two decades on, no other Nigerian side has won the trophy, and only Heartland in 2009 has reached the final since.
