Black Market sets Guinness record: 51,258 watched Lagos screening
Guinness World Records has confirmed the Nollywood thriller's Tafawa Balewa Square premiere as the largest film-screening audience on record. Here is what the official figure means, why it differs from the crowd estimate, and when the film reaches cinemas.
The Nollywood crime thriller Black Market now holds the Guinness World Records title for the largest attendance at a film screening. Guinness lists 51,258 people who watched the film from start to finish at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, on Saturday 26 September 2026.
That beats the previous record of 43,624, set in the Philippines in 2015, by more than 7,600 people. The film is due in cinemas nationwide on Friday 2 October.

- The counting rule: only people who stayed for the whole film counted. The Guinness entry describes the figure as people who attended “from start to finish”.
- State recognition: President Bola Tinubu congratulated Osikoya and Awolowo on Monday 28 September in a statement from his office, as reported by Okay News. The statement said: “The achievement of Black Market demonstrates what is possible when Nigerian creativity is matched with enterprise and scale.”
Why you have seen three different numbers
Reports have used 64,000, 51,000 and 51,258. They describe different things.
- 64,000 is the total crowd figure announced at the event by Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Channels Television reported. It includes people who came for the red carpet, music and food but did not watch the full film. Guinness did not use it.
- 51,000 is the rounded figure announced on the night and used in most early reports.
- 51,258 is the exact qualifying figure on the Guinness record page. This is the number that counts.
The gap between the crowd and the qualifying count is normal for mass-participation records: Guinness counts only people who meet the rules for the whole attempt.
What’s reported
- Gates opened at 2pm, with a red carpet from about 3pm and the screening planned for 7pm, according to Channels Television.
- Before the event, general admission was advertised at ₦2,000 and premium tickets at ₦50,000, TheNewsGuru reported.
- Guests included Lagos Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson-Awoyinka and actors including Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Stan Nze, Linda Ejiofor, Gabriel Afolayan and Kunle Afolayan (Channels Television).
- Funke Akindele replied to a post by cast member Omowunmi Dada on X with “Congratulations, dear. Nollywood to the world,” Legit.ng reported.
About the film
Black Market follows five market women running a cross-border fuel-smuggling operation whose lives unravel when the daughter of one of them is kidnapped. It was shot in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Production announcements credit Fatimah Binta Gimsay as director and co-writer (with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed), and Nora Awolowo and Nicole Ofoegbu as producers, ThisDay reported. The Guinness entry describes the film as directed by Awolowo; every other source we checked names Gimsay as director.
The cast includes Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini (Itele D Icon) and Uzor Arukwe. It is Rixel Studios’ second feature after Red Circle (2025), and was made with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production. FilmOne handles distribution.

Where this fits
Nigeria has a strong recent habit of record attempts as public events, from chef Hilda Baci’s cooking records to large Afrobeats dance gatherings, as Nairametrics noted. Black Market is different in one way: the record attempt was also the film’s launch, turning a premiere into a marketing event with a verifiable result.
What to watch next
The real test starts on 2 October. Opening-weekend box office figures will show whether the TBS crowd converts into cinema tickets. We will also watch for a correction or clarification of the director credit on the Guinness entry.
