Boomplay is one of Africa’s biggest music streaming apps, and for many Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan and Tanzanian artists it brings in more plays than Spotify. But what does a Boomplay stream actually pay? This calculator gives you a realistic range in naira or dollars, and lets you take off your distributor’s share to see what reaches your pocket.
How the money moves matters. Boomplay pays royalties to distributors, not directly to artists. Your distributor collects from Boomplay and pays you on its own schedule, after its cut. If your royalties are late or missing, your distributor is the first place to ask.
There’s no official Boomplay per-stream rate, and the public figures are all over the place. A Nigerian label’s 2022 analysis worked out about ₦1 per stream, roughly $0.75 per 1,000 at today’s exchange rate. A royalty-calculator site quotes $3–$5 per 1,000 streams. Rather than pick one, we place our ranges between them. For listeners mostly in Nigeria and the rest of Africa, we estimate $0.50–$3 per 1,000 streams, about ₦670–₦4,000, with roughly $1 a fair middle figure. These are our own estimates, which is why the calculator always shows a low, typical and high result.
Two things keep Boomplay’s average rate down. Its biggest markets have very low subscription prices, and free listeners are worth less than paying subscribers. A track that’s popular with premium listeners will earn towards the top of the range.
How to use it
- Enter your streams per month. Your Boomplay artist dashboard or distributor report will have them.
- Choose where most of your listeners live. “Nigeria & rest of Africa” covers Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania.
- Enter your distributor’s share (for example 15% or 20%), pick a currency and press Estimate my earnings.
Compare the same numbers on Audiomack and Spotify to see where your music earns most. All results are estimates, not guarantees. Your distributor statement is the only exact figure.
How it's calculated
- Boomplay pays royalties to distributors, who then pay artists. It does not publish a per-stream rate.
- Public figures disagree: a Nigerian label reported about ₦1 per stream in 2022, while a royalty-calculator site quotes $3–$5 per 1,000 streams. Our ranges sit between them (for Nigeria and the rest of Africa: $0.5–$3 per 1,000, typical $1) and are our own estimates.
- Premium subscribers are worth more than free listeners, and Boomplay's biggest markets have low subscription prices, which keeps the average rate down.
- Enter your distributor's share to see your take-home estimate.
