Taylor Swift wins video of the year, premieres Patient Zero at VMAs
Two more wins on Sunday took Taylor Swift to 32 VMAs, reported as the most for any solo artist. She also received MTV's first Artist Director Honors and premiered her self-directed Patient Zero video. The count, the credits and the song explained.
Taylor Swift won two more MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday 27 September, taking her total to 32. The Los Angeles Times reports that this makes her the most-awarded solo artist in VMA history, ahead of Beyoncé.
She also received MTV’s first-ever Artist Director Honors and used the moment to premiere the video for “Patient Zero”, which she wrote and directed herself.

The Artist Director Honors is a special award, separate from the competitive categories. It recognises her work behind the camera, which is also why the “Opalite” win matters: she directed that video too.
Swift turned 11 nominations into two wins. Her other nominations, including artist of the year, best pop, best album and several craft categories, went to others, most often Madonna.

The story plays like a gothic thriller: Farrell is cast as the villain, Johnson as his latest partner, and Swift’s character is eventually revealed to be a ghost, the LA Times reported in its scene-by-scene description.

“I wanted to incorporate elements of gothic ghost stories, true crime, psychological thrillers all in a setting I hadn’t really shot in much.”

In the same post on X, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, she described the house in the video as “a metaphor for the coldness of a relationship that’s faded and atrophied”, and thanked the VMAs for giving the video its world premiere “at the place where celebrating music videos became a thing.”
Where the song comes from
“Patient Zero” is one of four bonus tracks on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an expanded edition released on Thursday 24 September, the LA Times reported. The Life of a Showgirl itself was nominated for best album at Sunday’s show, which Madonna won for Confessions II.
